With Australia Day around the corner and more of us showing our Patriotic side, we thought we would have a look at some ways to inject a little “Australiana” into your wedding, minus the cringe factor! Adding touches of your heritage is common in other cultures, however with no real national dishes to speak of (pie and sauce anyone?) and no national costume that you would actually be seen dead in outside of a farm (blue singlet and stubbie shorts anyone?) it makes it hard to incorporate your national heritage without feeling like you are in some kind of theme park. The bride online team have come up with some ways to allow you to add subtle touches that will compliment and accent your wedding, which are also easy to implement for couples who may be saying “I do” overseas and want to weave a little bit of Australia in to their special day.

We would love to hear any suggestions that you may also have and of course don’t forget about our real weddings section, where you an submit pics of your wedding for brides to be to drool over!

Add native flowers to your boquet or table arrangements

Have Australian made bathroom accessories (soaps, lotions etc)

Include an Australian element to your bonboniere (garnish with a native flower, small potted seedling etc)

Include native foods such as Kangaroo, Crocodile and Barramundi on your menu

Use Australian made products for your invitations and stationery. Use images of Australia on your invitations

Use an Australian designer to create your dress and to design your accessories (pink akubras were all the range in 2011)

Use iconic Australian landmarks in your wedding photography (if possible)

Think beyond the obvious, there are some amazing Australian products out there, go hunting and gathering and see what you can find!

  • I LOVE this article! I am getting married in 6 weeks time and our theme is Vintage Australiana. We are doing almost all the things you have mentioned in your list and a few more.

My little touches to make the day Australian are:

We are having the ceremony at a relaxed local sailing club, surrounded by eucalyptus trees and the ocean.
All our floral decorations will be natives mixed with seasonal flowers and LOTS of silver eucalyptus
I am wearing a dress by a local Australian designer
Our food will include touches of Australiana – Fresh seafood, Lamb, bush tomoato sauces, wattle seed jus, pavlovas and lamingtons
I am decorating the venue with Bunting flags, Cushions and Rugs made from Vintage Australian Tea Towels and native floral fabric.
Our flowers will be displayed in mason jars which I have covered with “vintage” Australian produce labels.
We have used Native flora on our stationary set
We will be having photographs in the local area including the bushland and on the water.
We willl be having “Wild Native Hibiscus Flowers” for the ladies to enjoy in their Chanpagne.

Im still adding to the list of Australian touches we are including and will be publishing the final wedding photos and any ideas I have in the lead up on m Blog.
Thanks again for the article! I thought I was all alone in wanting to celebrate Australian Culture!
